Abby-L, the Jackal's first attempt at cloning Gwen, went searching for other Gwen clones. However, this would only last until the events of Spider-Island. After the battle, Joyce departed to parts unknown in search of a normal life. While Ben was able to save her with a well-placed web-shot, the Jackal fell to his apparent death. When she was knocked off the side of a building by the Jackal, he and Ben Reily rushed to her rescue. She even tried to get revenge on Jackal by killing him during the height of the final battle of that arc. Warren was killed while trying to flee the Green Goblin, and Joyce went back to help Peter Parker and his own clone Ben Reily deal with the recently restored Jackal.
Joyce played a major role in the story, as the prime Gwen Stacy who helped during the height of the lengthy storyline, "Maximum Cloneage." Around this time, the High Evolutionary's theories were disproven, and Joyce was revealed to actually be a clone of Gwen. DeMatteis and Mark Bagely's The Amazing Spider-Man #399, the Jackal created many of them, although almost all of them proved to be defective and fell apart in little time. After one Gwen Stacy clone appeared - briefly seeming to be the original Gwen Stacy reborn - in J.N. "The Clone Saga" is one of the most infamous periods of Spider-Man history, and it included multiple clones of multiple characters - including new clones of Gwen Stacy. However, this retcon of her true identity would itself be reversed down the line, during the events of "The Clone Saga." She even married another clone of Miles who went by the name Warren Miles.
However, during The Evolutionary War, it was suggested that Jackal had never perfected cloning and instead had used his technology to mutate some of his students into copies of other people - including Joyce Delaney, a young woman he transformed into a copy of Gwen.Īfter this suggested that Spider-Man's original "Clone Saga" had been a lie all along, Joyce had her memories restored and eventually tried to make a life for herself in New York City.
One of the first people he cloned was Gwen, who he used to torment the man he blamed for her demise, Spider-Man in Gerry Conway and Ross Andru's The Amazing Spider-Man #142 in 1975. Having been madly in love with her, his obsession led to him becoming the villainous Jackal, and he used his knowledge and scientific breakthroughs to perfect the science of cloning. Following her death, Gwen's college professor Miles Warren went off the deep end.
